Getting the most from a DistroKid HyperFollow link

If you release through DistroKid, every release comes with a HyperFollow page. It is a good pre-save page. Here is how it works, and how to put it behind a release page that tracks where listeners come from and switches to the release on release day.

What HyperFollow is

HyperFollow is DistroKid’s landing page for a release. DistroKid makes one for each release you upload, so you have something to share before the music is out. Before release, it works as a pre-save page: listeners connect their streaming account, and on release day the release is saved for them. After release, it lists the release on the stores and services DistroKid delivered to.

DistroKid adds features to HyperFollow from time to time, and some options depend on your DistroKid plan, so check DistroKid’s own pages for what your account includes today.

Why put a page in front of it

HyperFollow does its main job well. A separate release page adds things around it that a distributor page is not built for:

  • Sources. Every visit and every click through to a service is credited to the post, ad, bio or QR code it came from.
  • Your ad accounts. Your own Meta Pixel and TikTok Pixel on the page, and on Pro the same events sent from the server through the Meta Conversions API and TikTok Events API.
  • Your own fans. A sign-up form with double opt-in, release-day reminder emails and an add-to-calendar button.
  • Apple Music pre-add on the page, when Apple has listed the release as upcoming.
  • Your listeners’ language. The page appears in nine languages, with local services such as LINE MUSIC, Melon or KKBOX shown first where they matter.
  • One page per artist that lists every release, for your bio.

You do not have to choose. The HyperFollow link stays the pre-save source; your page sends Spotify listeners to it before release day and to the release afterwards.

Step by step

  1. Copy your HyperFollow link

In your DistroKid account, open the release and copy its HyperFollow address. It looks like distrokid.com/hyperfollow/your-name/….

  2. Paste it into listenthru

Choose New release and paste the HyperFollow link. listenthru reads its title and artwork, and any streaming links on it.

  3. Set the release date

Until that date the buttons read Pre-save, and the HyperFollow link is treated as a pre-save link.

  4. Add the rest

Add an Apple Music link if the release is listed as upcoming there (for pre-add), turn on release-day reminders, and add other services you want to show.

  5. Share your listenthru link

Use it in your bio, stories and ads, with a tagged copy for each place.

  6. Release day

From release day, listenthru finds the release on each service and points the pre-save buttons at it. Your link stays the same.

What happens on release day

listenthru recognises distrokid.com/hyperfollow/ links as pages that only make sense before release. From release day, it checks the services’ catalogs every hour for two weeks and, as soon as a service lists the release, points that button at the release itself — by UPC or ISRC where available, otherwise by exact title and artist. Until a service lists it, the button keeps the HyperFollow link, so nobody hits a dead end. Links you added yourself that are not pre-save pages are left alone.

Listeners who asked for a reminder receive one email on release day. Those who pre-saved through HyperFollow already have the release saved through DistroKid.

Tips for the HyperFollow link itself

  • Check that the artwork and title on your HyperFollow page are final before you share anything; listenthru reads them when you make the page, and you can change them on your page afterwards.
  • Look at the HyperFollow page on your phone once, so you know what Spotify listeners see when they tap through.
  • Keep the HyperFollow link only in one place — your release page — and share the release page everywhere else. Then there is one address to update if anything changes.
  • If you also get a Spotify Countdown Page for an album or EP, you can use it as the Spotify link instead; both are treated as pre-save links.

Reading the results

Pre-save counts from HyperFollow are in your DistroKid account. Your listenthru Insights show the other half of the picture: visits, clicks through to each service, Apple Music pre-adds made on your page, reminder sign-ups and the source of each. Put together, you can see which posts brought the people who went on to pre-save. More in which posts lead to clicks.

Questions

Can I use a HyperFollow link on a listenthru page?

Yes. Paste it when you make the page, or add it as a link. Until release day it is treated as a pre-save link; from release day the buttons lead to the release itself.

Will it break my HyperFollow pre-saves?

No. Listeners who choose Spotify before release day still pre-save on your HyperFollow page. listenthru only changes where the button goes once the release is out.

Do I still need HyperFollow if I use listenthru?

For Spotify pre-saves before release day, yes, or a Spotify Countdown Page if your release qualifies. listenthru does not run Spotify pre-saves itself.

What if the release appears on a service late?

That service keeps its pre-save link and is checked again every hour, for two weeks from release day.
